日本人だけの米独立リーグの野球チームとして、昨年小さな話題を呼んだ「サムライベアーズ」の話である。過酷な環境の中で様々なアクシデントがありながらも、野球に打ち込む挑戦者達の姿が克明に描かれれている。かと言って悲壮感と競争主義がクローズアップされた三文芝居のようにならないのは、野球という競技の本質と著者の筆力によるものだろう。読む人によって、様々な読後感が得られるはず。オススメ。

ロックンローラーの甲本ヒロトは
「子供のころから憧れてたものに、なれなかったんなら大人のフリすんな」と歌った。
これは成功者の優越感とか、才能がある人間の自負を歌ったわけではない。
本作の主人公、ネレーは「俺たちに諦めることに意味はない」と語った。
この言葉と、ヒロトの歌はきっと同じ意味だ。

「子供」が憧れるものなんて、途方もなくて、現実感に乏しくて、
無茶で、無謀なのかもしれない。
でも、誰しもがそんな時期を過ごしている。どうやら
僕の場合は海賊になりたかったらしいし。
そんなことをすっかり忘れて、なかったことにして、
遠い目をして「そんなこともあったなあ」なんて言うのは
義務と時間と限界と才能と日曜日の惰眠を知った大人の台詞
なんだろうけど、
それって、僕らがなりたかった「大人」じゃない。

ここに書かれている、20代半ばを過ぎて野球でメシを食おう、
ましてや異国の地で一旗挙げてやろうなんて思っている
「子供」な選手の話を、
若気の至りと看過せずに、うらやましいと思えるうちは、
まだ、ヒロトが言うような「大人」になれるチャンスがあるかなと思った。

もちろん中身は侍ベアーズのノンフィクションをベースにしていますが、「ネレー」という一人称により素晴らしい「青春野球小説」としても読めます。また野球好きならたまらない実在の人物の名前が出てきますから一気に読めてしまうと思います。津川晋一氏はノンフィクションスポーツライターの一人として名前を知られていたと思いますが、このような小説風のものも書けるということで、また新境地を開いたのでは。野球好きな人にはぜひ読んでもらいたい一冊です。
