　『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』のジェットコースターに乗せられたような物語展開は読み終わっても後を引きませんが、西洋史に関する謎解きの数々には「本当だろうか？」という疑問が尾を引きます。同じように疑問を感じる読書を放っておく手はない、と謎解き本もたくさん出版されているようです。
　その中で、『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』著者のダン・ブラウンへのインタビューが載っている唯一の本、というので本書も読んでみました。

　各界の専門家の文章をかき集めた本書には、『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』の内容は正しい、とする説も、間違っている、という説も紹介されていて、なんだかディベートの現場に立ち会ったような面白さがあります。

　私自身が興味深く感じたのは、『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』のストーリーの背景となっている「現在に伝えられているキリスト教が成立する以前には、後に異端として葬られた数々の福音書があった」という推定です。初期のキリスト教はひとつではなく、いくつにも分かれていたらしいのです。
　ダン・ブラウンによれば、権力基盤を強化したいと考えた教会の指導者たちが、西暦３２５年にニケーアで開催された公会議でイエスを神とする教義と、決定版の聖書を作り出したらしい――どちらもそのときまで存在しなかった、といいます。

　また、「キリストを表す最初の象徴は、十字架ではなく、魚だった。十字架がキリストの象徴として使われるようになったのは四世紀か五世紀」という話も紹介されていました。
　十字架というのは、磔（はりつけ）を連想させるシンボルで、キリストを殺した異教徒への憎しみを掻き立てるものだ、と聞いたことがあります。もし魚がキリストのシンボルだったら、キリスト教が違った種類の宗教に発展したかもしれません。

　謎を解いてくれるはずの本書は、いろいろな「if」を考えさせてくれる本でもありました。

ダビンチコードは小説であるから、前提として作り話であることを理解して読むことが大切です。その中には、いろいろな人名、地名、言い伝えが混じっています。それらの鍵となる単語を、それなりに解説してもらえる。出てくる単語、でてくる単語が始めての読者にとっては、何を言っているのかの再確認になる。
なお、本書も小説として読むことをお勧めします。
歴史的な論争に巻き込まれないようにするためには。

　シオン修道会やレンヌ＝ル＝シャトーに関する多くの｢事実」は、実は二十世紀になってから捏造された文書からとられたものであることが複数の研究者たちによって明らかにされています。当初これらの文書を信じて番組を放送したBBCも、1996年にその誤りを認める番組を放送しています。（Bill PutnamおよびJohn Edwin WoodによるThe Treasure of Rennes-Le-Chateau: A Mystery Solved（Sutton Publishing）参照。また、Paul Smithによる詳細な研究”Priory of Sion Debunked”がネット上に公開されています。）
