　文法を一通り修めた後で、さらにひとつ上を目指すスペイン語専門課程の学生向けの本です。第１章から第４章はスペイン語の歴史をローマ時代のラテン語段階からフランコ以後の現代までをたどります。第５章はスペイン語という言語の特徴を音韻面や時制・アスペクト・法といった文法面から多角的に見ます。そして第６章と第７章では地方と海外のスペイン語の特徴を探っています。

　あくまでスペイン語の学習者向けの専門書として書かれたものですから、一般のスペイン語会話学習者には用語も難しくレベルが高いでしょう。しかし、私自身は専門課程の学生ではありませんが、スペイン語の奥深さに触れることが出来た気がして興味深く読みました。またラテンアメリカのスペイン語の特徴については、やはり!一般会話学習書に比べて解説が細かく、勉強になりました。

　なお、類書としてこの本の３年後に出版された「スペイン語の世界」（世界思想社刊・99年）があります。スペイン語の歴史、ラテンアメリカのスペイン語、スペイン語の方言、スペイン語の法などに関する章があり、専門課程の学生ではない人にはこの「スペイン語の世界」の本のほうがコンパクトかつ平易でとっつきやすいと思います。
