　本書は1992年に原著が発売され、翌年邦訳された。アメリカでもこの本の反響は大きく、著者はこの著作でスポーツ経済学の専門家と目されるようになった。本書は大リーグビジネスのカラクリを、経済学のロジックで説明しており、2006年現在でもその分析は示唆に富んでいる。

　まず、大リーグは球団数を需要を下回る数に「抑制」している。この抑制された数を上回るほどに、「地元球団」を欲する多数の都市が存在している。これは、既存の球団にとっては好都合だ。球団は地元自治体に対して、球場の修理やリース形態の契約などに関して、「要求を受け入れなければ他都市に移転する」と脅しをかけて、より有利な条件を引き出すことが出来るからだ。この「特権」を享受できるのは、大リーグが1922年以来、反トラスト法の適用除外を受けてからである。

　何にもまして、大リーグオーナーたちは、先の反トラスト適用除外に加え、「保留事項」によって賃金交渉で適正価格を下回る給与を支払うのにすんだので（いわゆる「搾取」）オーナーたちは大儲けできたのだ。

　こうした状況が、米大リーグ界の閉鎖的体質を生んでいると著者は糾弾している。が、ある意味では、これは日本の読者には「衝撃的」かもしれない。玉木正之や、ロバート・ホワイティングやが再三にわたって日米双方に流布してきた「日本球界の閉鎖的体質」と驚くほど似ているだろう。この「閉鎖的体質」は「日本社会のムラ体質」だか何だかと言うのは見当違いで、実は日米ともに競争政策、公共政策の欠落が問題というわけなのだ。
