ヴェンダースとの共同作業で有名な作家ハントケの初期代表作です。のちの『反復』のような思弁的難解さはなく、現代人の心理をスタイリッシュに切り取っています。翻訳もきわめて上質で読みやすく、ハントケ入門としても格好と思われます。断片をつなげて物語をコラージュしていく手法が印象的で、ロブ＝グリエやデュラスなど、同時代の作家たちが映画に向けていた関心と比較するのも面白いです。ヌーヴォーロマンやヌーヴェルヴァーグが好きな人には特にお奨め。

原著作者のペーター・ハントケは、戦後のドイツにおいて、間違いなく最重要な作家の1人です。ただし、彼がどういう作風の作家であるか、というのは、彼の変遷ぶりを考えると、簡単なコメントで表することはできそうにありません。そんなハントケの作品群の中で、この作品は、読み解くことを求められる比較的読みにくい作品と表することができると思います。読みにくいというのは、翻訳に依るところも大きいのですが、物語に抑揚がなく、読み通すのにそれなりの気合いが要るという意味です。それでも、ハントケの作品中では、重要と言われるものですので、彼が脚本を担当した映画「ベルリン天使の詩」を飽きずに観られる方には、十分読む価値があると思います。
