分子運動論，熱力学の統計的扱い，量子力学，量子化学，分子の分配関数，回転温度，縮重度，モル比熱の量子的解釈・・・こんな用語に抵抗を覚え，なかなか理解が進まなかった私にとって，この本はまさに奇跡でした。これほど買ってよかったと思えた本は今までありませんでした。　　化学の本でここまで数式に溢れ，式変形過程も分かりやすい本があったでしょうか。こんな公式が何の役に立つのか，いまいち理解できないなと思っていると，すぐ次に分かりやすい例題が出てくるし，ここで何が言いたいのかが表題になっているのでひとつひとつ理解しながら進めていくことができます。独学にも最適です。

正直国内の本でここまで丁寧に量子化学の計算を紹介している本はないのではないだろうか。厚いだけあって、問題、解説は申し分ない。しかも平易な英語で書かれており、純粋に内容を楽しめる。量が多い分やり遂げるのは時間がかかる。でもそれだけの価値はある本だと思う。

私にとってはこの分野のバイブルです。

　物理化学の中でもひときわ説明の難しい熱力学を，ここまで見事に体系化して，一切の迷いなく読める本は他に全くない．熱力学第一法則から始まって，まるで良くできた長編小説のように完璧な論理構成で納得できるのは奇跡に近い．熱力学をあきらめかけた人でも，これなら感動的に体系を深く正しく理解できるであろう．統計力学と一体化した解説も見事である．

　上巻の量子化学も非常に丁寧に書かれていて，かつ下巻との連携が良くできているので，この上下巻だけは物理化学を学ぶものの座右の銘となろう．物理化学が，寄せ集めの学問でないことを，深く納得できる．

　なお，本書は，訳書にしては珍しく日本語訳も優れている．これも本書の価値を著しく高めている．
