最近、医療ミスのニュースが世間を騒がせている。医療に対する不信感が、かつてないほどに高まっているように思う。そんな折､本書を手にした。著者はホスピス医であり、いかに病院での死が悲惨なものであるかを、言葉だけでなく自身の体験からの確信として書いている。もし自分や家族がガンになったら、そしてガンの末期となったらと思うと、医療は誰のためのものなのかを深く考えさせられた。本書には、ある患者さんとそのご家族が延命治療を希望しない旨を直筆で書いた事前指定書がそのまま掲載されている。これを見て、医療ではなくケアが必要であることを痛感しない人はいないだろう。命を大切さを学ぶうえでも、医師だけでなく、多くの人に読まれてほしいと思う。

本書を読み、大げさではなく死生観を変えざるを得なかった。昨年末、二人の身近な人をガンで亡くした。うち一人は、叔父であった。叔父の妻が、なかなか叔父に合わせてくれず、死の一週間前に病室で合ったときには鼻、腕、腿、（断続的に口）が管で繋がれ、苦しそうであった。話すことも出来ず、目で訴え涙を流していた。これは治療ではなく苦行であった。・・・本書は、「死に向かう生を安らかに生き、感謝の言葉を残し静かに死に逝く」ことの大切さを諄々と説いている。深く考えさせられた。

つい先日、末期ガンにかかった祖母を看取り終えました。
祖母は在宅での療養を強く希望しており、週一回の往診と
痛みなど不快症状に対する治療のみで
私が責任を持って介護をしておりました。
その際、この本がとても役に立ち心強い味方になってくれました。
お涙頂戴の体験談がなかったことで、現実的に状況を考えられる
ことができました。

本当にこの本には感謝しています。
