数学を図解するというおそらく初めてチャレンジされた本ではないかと思う斬新なアイデアの本。他の数学書ではあまりにもわずらわしくて書かれることの少ない図もあり、しかも美麗なのにまた感心しました。他の本ではコンピュータに書かせた説明も手抜きのが多い中、出色の名著と言える。この本と岸野正剛「今日から使える物理数学」や石村園子「すぐ分かるフーリエ解析」、「なっとくする複素関数」小野嘉孝、文系の人には石村貞夫「金融・証券のためのブラック・ショールズ方程式」を併読すればより楽しく学べると思います。

素晴らしい本です。基本的な数学機構の原理を図解でわかりやすく論じています。日本の大学で学ぶ応用数学はあまりに抽象的すぎてわかりにくく、物理、工学者というよりも数学者向けといえます。基本的数学機構の深い理解なしに物理、工学の研究は不可能です。本書は数学を道具として使う大学一年生が最初に購入するのがベストだと思います。

　教養課程の物理学のテキストブックとして使用される本は無味乾燥なものが多く、そこで使用される数学の理解の如何により、学生に無為な時間を過ごさせてしまう可能性があります。
　そんなことを考えていた時に見つけたのが本書でした。本書の「まえがき」の「〜　どういう目的で数学が考え出されたかということから出発して、（略）、公式が何に使われるか、何のために学ぶのかといったことを理解した上で学習することは（略）」は、私が考えていたことに応えるものでした。本書の内容自体は、私の「こうであったら」と考えていたものとは異なりましたが、本書の存在により、理工学の基礎となる物理の面白さに目覚めてくれる学生が増えるのではと考えるとうれしくなります。
