JavaでCocoaを利用する為の最良の入門書であると思います。第１章から５章でPure Javaについて、第６章から１２章までがCocoa-Javaの解説となっており、CocoaだけでなくJavaの基礎から学ぶ事ができます。Pure Javaの解説についてだけをとってみても他の入門書に退けを取らない出来だと思いますが、特に評価すべき点はサンプルプログラムが、終始簡潔にまとまったものばかりで、最後までわかりやすく解説されています。MacOS Xのアプリケーション開発の為の基礎がしっかりと身に付き、プログラム未経験者であっても、MacOS Xアプリケーション開発のプロセスがつかめる内容になっていると思います。

Javaの入門書を読んだきりでプログラミングから遠ざかってる人、Javaの再入門ができます。それも、あこがれのMacOSXで。
文体は柔らかく読みやすいです。情報はしっかり詰まっていて、サンプルプログラムを打ち込んで実行したら、Macが思い通りに動いてくれます。この本はDeveloperToolsのバージョンが２００１Dec版がベースですが、10.1.5+２００２Aprでも動きます。そのあたりは、APPENDEXを先に読まれるとよいでしょう。
文章中に何箇所か誤字があるのが残念です。

本書は、JavaでCocoaプログラミングを始めたい人におすすめしたい本です。JavaのGUIプログラミングにある程度習熟しているのであれば、２章から５章は読む必要はないので、150頁は読み飛ばせるでしょう。

本書を読み終えて一番印象に残ったことは、Pure JavaのクラスとCocoa Javaのクラスの使い分けの難しさでした。人によってとらえたかは様々だと思いますが、中途半端にJava GUIをマスターしたままCocoaのGUIプログラミングに進んでしまうと、中にはかえって混乱してしまう人もいるのではないかと思います。

たとえば、Javaプログラマーが慣れ親しんでいる規則の一つにget&setメソッドがありますが、恐ろしいことにCocoa Javaではそのエッセンスがほとんど使えません。またPure JavaのすべてのAPIが使えるわけでもないので、どうしてもCocoa JavaのAPIのマスターが不可避となっているのです。

Cocoa Javaプログラミングは、いわばMacOSXというキャンバスにJavaという背景を下地にして、Aquaという美しい絵を描くようなものです。キャンバスはしっかりできているので、背景を描いたら下地が完全に乾くまで待ちましょう。慌てて描こうとすると、下地と書きたいものがグチャグチャに混ざってしまい、何も書けなくなってしまうかも知れません。

ともかく本書を利用してJavaによるCocoaプログラミングを始めたい方は、まずはJavaのAPIをある程度マスターしておいてください。Javaを書き慣れた人がCocoaプログラミングを始めるのなら、間違いなくおすすめ度星５つの本だと思います。２章から５章の内容と対象となる読者の関係が今ひとつピンとこなかったので、できればその分ページを削って安くしてもらいたかったです。
