デバドラの開発には一般アプリの開発とは異なる、固有の難しさがあります。この本の前半では特定のハードウェアを叩く以前の、デバドラ開発の基本的な知識や考え方が書かれていて、後半でハードウェアごとの各編となります。この構成はオライリーの『Linuxデバイスドライバ』に似てますが、この本のほうがより網羅性を落とし基本に絞った記述になっているので、入門者にとってはありがたいです。

バージョン2.6になってからもカーネルは大きく変化し、新しいアイデアが採用されています。本書のスタンスとしては、できるだけシンプルで信頼性の高いドライバを書くための、将来もサポートされる見込みのあるシステムコールが選択され解説されています。

一読してみて、デバドラを設計するにはとてつもない力量が要求されるということが、とりあえず分かりました。先は長いなぁ。

4.0 out of 5 stars おおよそ分かりやすいが、一部不親切なところも, 2009/11/19
本書はカーネルとデバイスドライバがお互いにやりとりする仕組みを主に説明しています。
オライリーの「LINUXデバイスドライバ」よりも分かりやすい文章でドライバの仕組みを説明してくれます。
ただし、第六章「ドライバプログラミングの実際」の後半であるP177〜P229の間は急に不親切な説明になるように感じました。

デバイスの説明もあります。
PCI,PCI Express,I2C,ACPI,IPMI,ネットワークドライバの説明があります。
PCIとI2Cについては分かりやすく説明できていると思われますが、それ以外のデバイスについては不十分な説明が多いと思いました。
特にIPMIなんてサーバの管理にしか使わないようなドライバの説明に多くのページを割くのは疑問に感じました（しかも分かりにくい）。

それでも本書はLINUXデバイスドライバの入門書としては今のところ最も良くできているのではないかと思われます。
