結城 浩には、品がある。本書でも氏の品がにじみ出ている。

筆者の他の書籍では、
主にプログラミング言語の啓蒙書らで知っていたが、
それら書籍でも、誠実にひとつひとつ丁寧に内容を噛んで含めるように、
そして諭すようにちょっとずつ解説していく様子が非常に好感が持てた。

そうして、読者を決して置いてけぼりにしない。
わかりやすいが、内容自体は、決して簡単ではない。

そうした態度が本書でも貫かれている。
本書を読む前と後とでは、数式に態度がめっきり変わっている自分に気づく。

「数式」を前に、
わからない、なんだか難しそう、という、先入観で捉える前に、
ひとつひとつ実直に、まずは、数式を読んでみよう、と思える。

正直、主人公と女生徒とのやり取りの「萌え」部分については、
免疫が無いせいか、かなり面食らって、「（このやりとりは）果たして必要か」
という気にもなったが、
本書を読み進める上で、スパイス、というか甘みとなっているのは確かだろう。
（この甘味がなければ、より無味乾燥であったかもしれない。
　そういう意味で、本書にはふさわしい味付けだったろう。
　筆者の品の良さがあるので、読めないほどの甘ったるさでもない。）

本書を誰に勧めるか、という問いがあったとすれば、
中学生、高校生、あるいは、数学嫌いの社会人、と
幅広い層が思い浮かぶ。
一見中高生向けとも言える外観ながら、読んでみると読者の層を限定しない、
けれど「教育」書として極めて秀逸の作品といえると思う。

（念のため言うと、読み物としても、当然十分なクオリティがある。）

ひっくるめて言うと、本書は、
安易ではない、非常に誠実な態度で書かれた文書であり、
誰にとっても読む価値が多い書だと思う。

前作「数学ガール」の続き。副題に「フェルマーの最終定理」とあるように、出てくる話題ことごとくがフェルマーの最終定理を想起させるものとなっている。この点、ミルカさんの口を借りて「最近は趣味に走りすぎじゃないか？」と自分で突っ込んでいる。
　本作では数学初心者として中学生のいとこユーリが登場する。理解の覚束ない読者の疑問をぶつける役目だ。ただし、中学生にしては数学を理解しすぎている。知識がないというだけで数学的手法を修得しているという印象さえも受ける。そうでもしないと、ストーリーが進まないという裏事情もあるだろう。また、ガウス並の能力を誇るミルカさんの前では、その才能はかすんで見えるため、むしろバランスはとれている。
　今回、最終的にフェルマーの最終定理の証明を説明する。多分、完全な説明にはなっていないと思う。････「多分」とか「思う」とかいうのは、僕自身大雑把にしか把握できなかったため。
　数学の研究は「役に立つのか？」という疑問には応えない。好きだから、楽しいからやる、という動機が最初にあって、後の時代に実利が付いてくるという面がある。そういった数学の純粋な性格を後押ししているように感じた。
　数学をこねくり回すことで楽しみを覚えた経験のある方には間違いなくお勧めできる。

前作同様に小説形式。登場人物によってうまくレベル分けしてくれている。
今回は整数問題、特にフェルマーの最終定理を扱う。
数を「代数」・「幾何」・「解析」という数学の異なる分野から視点を変えて観察する。
それがつながりにつながっていく。この美しさを教えてくれる。
そしてその結晶こそがフェルマーの最終定理なのだ。
難しい予備知識は必要ない反面、内容はとても難しい。
しかし、大雑把なイメージをつかむだけでも十分面白い。数学に魅せられる。
最先端の数学に触れてみたい人、数学の魅力・美しさに触れてみたい人におすすめの一冊。
