扱われているルーティングプロトコルが豊富です(RIP1/2,IGRP,IS-IS,OSPF,EIGRP,BGP4)。
それぞれのプロトコルの仕組み、設定例、パケットの構造、注意点が説明されています。
特に再配布機能を使うときの注意点（技術者がはまりやすい罠）が述べられているのは有益です。

しかし、内容を詰め込みすぎたせいか説明がやや不親切に感じました。
本書の前書きにはTCP/IPの基礎知識が必要と書かれていますが、フレームリレー、ATMのようなTCP/IPの範囲外の言葉も出てきます。
文章は全体的に分かり難く感じることが多く、著者の意図を推測しながら読まなければならないところが多数あります。
図も不親切です。図が小さ過ぎて必要な情報が図に書かれていないことがあります。
例えば、ネットワークの図にルーターの接続関係とインターフェースのIPアドレスは図中に書かれていても
どのルーターがどのような役目なのか図中で示されておらず、文章のみに書かれていることもあります。
場合によっては図の書いてあるページと文章のページを行ったり来たりする必要があります。
入門書と言うにはやや読み難い本です。

あくまでも入門書として書かれていますので、設定やコマンドの説明は雑です。
詳細はマニュアルなどで調べてくれという本です。
しかし、ルーティングの仕組みを知るには勉強になりました。
