グーグルmapのバージョンが1の解説です。
現在は既にバージョン2ですので、使えない関数やオブジェクトが多々あります。

GoogleMapAPIを使って、自分のサイトに地図を置こう、という主旨の本。
この手の説明書にしては、ページ数が少ない。
サイトへの地図の設置や固定マーカの表示だけでなく、サーバサイドスクリプトと連動して、マーカを登録できるような説明もしているのだが、ページ数の割にはカバーしようとする範囲が広すぎるため、無理を感じる。
ひとつのステップでひとつづつのテクニックを解説することができず、多くのことを一度に盛り込むため、どこで何をしているのか分かりにくい。
ページの多くをソースコードに充てているため、解説そのものが少なく、読者はソースコードの中から「どうしてそうなるのか」を読み解かなくてはいけない。
少なくともこの本に書いてあることを理解しようとすれば、JavaScript,XML,PHP,SQLなどの基本は理解している必要があるので「誰でもカンタン」というわけにはいかない。
現時点ではGoogleMapAPIに特化した本は本書くらいしか見当たらないので、残念ながらこの分かりにくい本を読み解いていくしかありません。
オライリーのGoogle Maps Hacks が日本語版が出版されれば、本書は不要になるのではないでしょうか。

一言ご注意。Ajaxそのものの説明はほとんどありません。
この本は、Google Maps APIを実際に使う方にはお勧めです。
しかし、Ajaxについて体系的に身に着けたい場合は、ほかの入門書を選びましょう。
