5.0 out of 5 stars 中世ヨーロッパが舞台の大抒情詩です！, 2007/5/6
私がはじめてケン・フォレットの作品と出会ったのは、「自由の土地を求めて」でしたが
そのときの興奮と感動があまりに大きかったため、逆に裏切られるのが怖くて
「大聖堂」にはなかなか手を出せないでいました。
しかしさらに大きな興奮と感動そしてスケールのでかさに度肝を抜かれてしまいました。
・・・最高でした。
小説って偉大だなあ、とあらためて感心させられました。
この本に出会えて、最高によかったです。
お薦めです。

カテドラルを建てたい！という職人気質の主人公に純粋では無い政治・宗教家達の思惑が絡む。エリス・ピーター女史の「修道士カドフェル」シリーズと時代、舞台（ベネディクト会）が同じ。それを別な角度から、かなり派手なドラマに描いているところが面白みの一つ。話の展開が早く次は？と読み進んでしまう娯楽小説。建築用語も多く石工職人の知識も、昨今の日本の「耐震偽装」の問題と重ね合わせると笑ってしまう箇所も。「基礎は大事」「壁がしっかりしていれば・・・」
カテドラルの図解本も手元において読みたくなる本

おもしろい本だ。ストーリーに意外性があって、主人公の運も二転三転、上、中、下、三冊の大冊を息もつかせず読ませる工夫に富んでいる。それに加えて、イギリス地方の中世社会をのぞき見るという異文化観察の楽しみがある。評者はこの後者の方に惹かれて読んだのだが、期待にそむかぬ面白さだった。修道院の組織と運営、農民生活や飢えの様子、暴力や殺人や戦争の描写、職人集団の組織と意思決定法、等々、興味深い描写がいたるところにあり、明らかに著者は中世社会の実態を目に見るように描くことを、この作品の「売り」にしようとしていることがわかり、実際それは成功している。これらの描写のほとんどには、小説だから当然明示されてはいないが、きっとなんらかの文献の裏付けがあるのだろうと推測できる書きぶりである。それで思わずにいられないのは、この本に登場する準主人公格の魅力的な二人の女性のことである。この二人の（たぶん）下級貴族は極めて意志的で独立不羈、男顔負けの活躍なのだが、このような女は果たして中世イギリスに存在し得たのか、これだけは著者の創作なのか、それとも現代よりも中世の方がこのような存在は多かったのか、この点がはなはだ気になるのである。著者には、経済的、社会的環境ばかりでなく、心性の点でも中世を忠実になぞった作品を次には期待したいものである。
