   Linuxはサーバー用のOSとしては普及しているが、クライアントであるデスクトップ用としてはあまり普及していない。LinuxではExcelやWordのようなスタンダードな事務用ソフトがないため、自分でOSやアプリケーションの複雑な設定を行わなければならない、というのがそのおもな原因ではないだろうか。

   著者は読者に対し、「Linuxを今日インストールし、即使えるようになりたい」という焦燥な姿勢ではなく、半年から１年かけじっくりとLinuxシステムと向き合い使いこなすような、気長な姿勢が必要である、と述べている。重要なのは、インストール、設定、コマンド等の実践の中で試行錯誤を繰り返し、Linuxの経験値や自信を高めていくことであろう。Linuxに関心を持ち、これから取り組みたいと思っている読者にぜひおすすめしたい。（大塚佳樹）

　著者の経験を基にLinuxとはどのようなものか，初心者がつまずきやすいポイントはどこかを解説した入門書。体系だった知識ではなく著者の経験知を伝授することで，著者と同じようにLinuxにとまどいを感じる初心者を力付けることを目指す。cpコマンドでの再帰コピーが不完全（p．203）といった経験知ゆえの間違った記述も散見されるが，メッセージ性が高いため従来の入門書で訴求できなかった層にもLinuxの利用を広められそうだ。

読み物としてTipsとか経験談が書かれています。Linuxを日常的に使っている人にとっては役立つ記事もあるでしょう。

ただ、著者も文中で記しているが、著者はUNIXの研究家でもなく、決して哲学（成立の背景とか、なぜそうなのかというった理由を実証的に語っているとか）を語っている本でもありません。Linuxを使っていて、その雰囲気から「哲学みたいなものに触れたような気がする」程度の内容です。

どんな題名が書いてあろうと勝手ですが、私が知る限りの「哲学」と名の付く本のたぐいではありません。
パソコン初心者にはレベルもやや高く、また、一読してLinuxの概要がわかるといった内容でもありません。体系的に詳しく解説しているというものでもないので、マニュアルやハンドブックとして活かすこともできません。

自分にとっては、中身を確認せずに買って後悔した本のひとつです。

学習書と言うより、Linuxとどのように付き合っていくか、というような内容です。初心者用の読み物としては楽しめるでしょう。ちょっと気になるのは、著者のWindows批判が強いように思うことです。

かなり読みやすいです。読み物としてもおもしろいしね。
Linuxをインストールしてみたけどどこから手をつけていけばいいかわからな
かった時にこの本に出会いました。これを読めばLinuxを使い始める足がかり
になりますよ。
インストールしたけど行きづまってる人、必読です。あくまで入門書だと思い
ますけどね。
