官公庁や企業のWebサイトの多くは，文字列を指定してサイト内の文書（Webページ）を検索できるサービスを提供している。こうしたサービスを実現するために，多数のWebサイトで採用されているソフトが，本書で紹介する「Namazu」である。

　Namazuは，CGI経由で使うオープンソースの全文検索ソフトだ。本書ではWebサーバーのApacheとNamazuを組み合わせて全文検索システムを構築する手順を紹介する。付属のCD−ROMにNamazuが収録されており，ローカルの環境でも使えるので，手早く検索システムを試してみたいという読者に適している。ただし，シェル・コマンドやWebサーバーの知識は必要。CD−ROMに収録されているのは，ソースコード，Red　Hat　Linux用バイナリ，Windows版バイナリだ。Windowsへのインストール方法も記述されているが，どちらかというとLinuxユーザー向けの説明が多い。

前著では、「日本語全文検索システムの構築と活用」になっているが、
本書では、「NAMAZU」が前面に出ている。すでに、日本語検索システムとして有名になったことがわかる。

厳密なDBを作る必要がある場合があります。
時間を争ったり、正確性を保障する必要がある場合です。

数％くらいのごみがまざっても、安価に全文検索をできる方がよい場合はもっとたくさんあります。
本書で紹介するNamazuが、その代表例です。
プログラマなら、grepコマンドだけでも十分かもしれませんが、
プログラマ以外の人にはNamazuが最適です。
表紙のなまずの絵は、全文検索ソフトNamazuを示している。

LinuxにもWindowsにも導入でき、とても便利なソフトである。
インストールの仕方から、運用、利用の仕方までわかる。

NamazuシステムはUNIX系プラットフォームでもWindows系プラットフォームにも対応した全文検索システムです。非常に多くのサイトで採用されているようです。
この本は2001年の発刊ですが、基本的な部分は現時点でも十分にまかなえると思いますので、持っていて損はない一冊と思います。
