こいつは出色の出来。これを読んだ時、衝撃だった。ある意味今までの“ポピュラー”音楽評論とは一線を画す、真に泥臭くて、ソウルフルな、かつ重厚な一冊です。旧来の音楽雑誌がエリック・クラプトンを“ゴッド”と祭り上げ、それに対し、クラプトンは常にＲ・ジョンソン、３大キングになどにリスペクトを促している、その真意が何かが分かります。これは白人ブルースマンがなぜ、ブルースからロックなど（たとえばECがロックやレゲエへ）偏向していったか、なぜコンプレックスから逃れられないのか、そのワケが分かります。全自称“ブルースマン”が読むべし。ブルースは奥深い…。

９人の著者が、それぞれ違った角度からブルースを研究されています。
文化、歴史、言語などの一つ一つのテーマの中にもいろいろな見方があって、最後まで飽きずに読めました。

ブルースって、実は音楽的にはペンタだ！ターンラウンドだ！6th多用だ！といくらでも知ったかぶりできるわけだけど、確かにここまで探求されると文句の言いようがない。コード分解だ裏コードだとかもううっとーしい。要はＳＯＵＬがあるかないかの話しなんですよね。私もブルースをもはや漫然と聞けません。日本人としてブルースとこの先どう対峙すべきか…。確かに白人ブルースギタリストで考えると、J・ベックはジャズ、J・ペイジはフォークや民族音楽、E・クラプトンはレゲエ、とブルースの世界から自然と離れていく過程が実証済みの感はありましたが、この本はそれを見事に証明してしまいました。ましてや日本人としてどうしろと・・・。例えばFathers and SonsもいくらＭ・ブルームフィールドやＰ・バタフィールドが頑張ってもマディがいるから成立するし、London Sessionsのクラプトン、Ｓ・ウインウッド、Ｂ・ワイマン、Ｃ・ワッツだって結局ハウリンウルフがいるからあれだけ好調に聞こえるわけです。ボブ・ディランだって、なぜ「ブラインド・ウィリー・マクテル」を80年代最高の歌の題材として歌えたか、自明ですね。この本はアルバム紹介本でも音楽テキストでもない、ましてや自称評論家の言いたい放題でもない、もっとgenuinな香りをもって語りかけてきます。山崎まさよし、ストーンズ、ジミヘンからマイルスまで、原点はここです。著者にはマジメに感服。
