サブプライム問題が私が思っている以上に深刻な問題であり、
その本質を鋭くえぐったこの本の内容はおすすめできます。

シューさんのおっしゃるとおり、本書を出版された2007年末に読んでおけば
と思いました。わたしもサブプライム問題を過小評価していました。

バブルは繰り返す。そしてこの問題の闇は深い。去年のうちは
サブプライム問題は一時的と言っていたエコノミストたちは信用できません。

マスコミの人たちも著者のようにもっと真実を解き明かす取材を
してもらいたいと思います。

複雑に絡み合ったサブプライム問題を丁寧に解きほぐして、分かりやすく書かれていて、金融や経済に詳しくなくても理解できました。

サブプライム問題の兆候は２年前から現れていたというのに、バブルピーク時に特有の「現状正当化理論」が出回って、気付くのが遅れたというエピソードにはなるほどと思ったし、「中央銀行が金融危機を未然に防いだとか、不況の原因を根本的に治療して、適切なルールを導入したという話は、ついぞ聞かない。むしろ失敗例が多い」という指摘はなかなか鋭いと思いました。

本の最後の方で触れられているのですが、サブプライム問題の本質を理解できるようになったら、日本でもこれから普及しそうな「リバース・モーゲージ」の落とし穴も見えてきました。

こんなふうに難しい話を分かりやすく、かつ、専門的に深いところまで導いてくれる本は貴重だと思います。

本書は米国の住宅優遇税制について詳しく書かれているが、まさに、サブプライム問題は日本の８０年代のバブルそのものであったことが良く分かる。
地価は上がるという神話が狭い日本だけでなく、広大な米大陸で繰り返されたのは驚きだが、背後には、人間の欲望、不動産業者と金融機関が結託した地上げもどきのモラルハザードが隠れている。

しかも、最近明らかになったところでは、不良債権の規模は数十兆円と言われ、日本のそれよりはるかに大きく、国際社会を巻き込んでいる。
日本の銀行は公的資金投入で何とか生き残ったが、CITIやメリルリンチなど巨大な米金融機関は、中東や中国、ロシアの政府系ファンドの融資を得てかろうじて存続している。
日本は不良債権処理に１０年以上かかり、経済は停滞したが、米国はさらに多くの歳月を要するだろう。
アメリカ帝国の終焉が始まろうとしている。
