武士道を原文で読みたいので購入したのですが、内容が無さ過ぎた。。新渡戸稲造が悪いのではない。本の編集が悪い。というのも、この本には武士道の抜粋部分しか書かれていなかったのである。左ページには武士道の抜粋部分、右側にはその抜粋部の日本語訳（正直、不自然な日本語）が書かれており、これがプロの仕事かYO！といった印象。
ちがう「武士道」の本を買えばよかった・・・

本書を手に取ったのは藤原正彦氏「国家の品格」の中で武士道に触れていたためである。私の中では「武士道=封建的」というイメージがあったので、「品格」とそぐわない感じがあったのだ。藤原氏が参照していたのは新渡戸氏の本書であったので、自分なりの解を求めるために紐解いて見た。本書は見開きの左頁が新渡戸の原文(英語)、右頁が訳文になっている。新渡戸の考えを知るためにも、なるべく原文に当たった方が良い。本書は「日本では宗教を教えないのに道徳をどう教えるのか ?」という西欧人の問いに答えるために書かれた由。抜粋だが、原文で最初に当たるには適当だろう。

新渡戸の基本的な考えは、「武士道」とは生活の規範と言う事である。その構成要素は、仁、義、忠などの儒教思想を日本流に洗練したものである。金儲けに走る事は卑しいとされ、清貧が理想とされる。突き詰めれば禅の世界に行くと言う。定本がない抽象的な「武士道」を新渡戸は、聖書、ソクラテス、アリストテレス、騎士道などを引用しながら西欧人に理解しやすいように工夫して説明している。彼の英語力と相まって国際人としての新渡戸の面目躍如である。だが、切腹や刀を使う事の説明辺りから怪しくなる。「腹に精神がある」と言う説明は如何にも苦しい。刀に関しても、「必要な時以外に使う事は卑怯者とされる」とあるが、軍事国家を否定する次章と矛盾する。国家権力が武力を"必要"と認めてしまえば、「武士道」の延長で戦争が起こってしまうからである。これは吉田松蔭を引用する章で顕著になる。新渡戸は松蔭を近代のパイオニアとして次の詩を引用している。

　　「かくすれば　かくなるものと知りながら　やむにやまれぬ大和魂」

　この考えが、大正から昭和にかけての日本の侵略戦争に繋がった事は新渡戸は知る由もあるまい。そして、あの連合赤軍のメンバの崇拝対象が松蔭であった事も。

　どんな思想にも言える事だが、新渡戸自身の「武士道」に関する考えは美しいが、使い方次第では危険思想ともなる事を思い知らされた一作。無論、新渡戸には責任はなく、それどころか西欧人を英語で説得しようとする情熱には感嘆させられたが、同時に思想を活かす側の責任の重要性を改めて感じさせられた。

武士道を原文で読むというタイトル通り確かに、左に英文、右に対訳文が載っています。
しかし、ただ、書いてあるだけの内容。武士道を一度知っているのならばまだしも、いきなりこの本を購入するのは
お勧めしない。武士道の入門といえる「漫画でわかる武士道」の方がわかりやすく面白いです。
