’０２年「第１回『このミステリーがすごい！』大賞」優秀賞受賞作。このときの大賞は文庫化されてからベストセラーになった浅倉卓弥の『四日間の奇蹟』。選評によれば、本書は『四日間・・』がいなければ大賞が獲れたのではないかとのニュアンスもうかがえる。

本書は「きみは・・・」で語られる独創的な二人称記述の小説である。

父の急死の真相を探るため、主人公１７才の高校生カズは幼馴染の勧めでスクーバダイビングを始めながら海辺のクラブに潜り込む。だが糸口が見えないままにダイバーの変死事件が起こり、中絶斡旋の噂、製薬会社の暗躍、ヒト再生研究など次々に、米軍横須賀基地まで巻き込む組織的かつ巨大な疑惑が浮上する。

前半は歩むべき道を模索する孤独な若者カズのあくまでも静謐な語り口の青春物語。ダイビングの描写も臨場感があってすがすがしい。

後半に入ると事件や謀略的疑惑が沸き起こり、大掛かりなミステリー趣向が駆使される。その過程では迫真の海中活劇も繰り広げられる。さまざまなことにもまれながら「きみ」ことカズも成長してゆく。最後には意外などんでん返しも用意されている。

夏の湘南を舞台にダイビングの魅力と謎解きが融合した清冽で端正なイメージの青春ミステリーである。

読み始めは何が言いたいのかわからなかった。でも次第に謎は深まり、真相に手が届きそうでなかなか届かなくて、読み進めてしまう。

ダイビングの魅力とその奥深さ。海と生物。主人公「カズ」の心情。ティーンエイジャーの脆さ。大人と社会に対するシニカルな視点。
どれをとっても文句のつけようがない。

実は最後に明かされる”真実”は、最初に知りたかった真相とは別のところにある。
その”真実”がわかった瞬間、「ああ、この小説はスゴイ！」と思った。そうだったのか。本当は最初からひとつたりとも読み落としてはいけなかったのだ！

ダイビングなどやったことない私としては、その技術や理論は大変面白い。
また、読んでいる最中ずっと「きみは・・・」で語られる文法が気になっていました。
しかし、終盤核心に迫る部分で、長く貫かれた「文法」が意味を持ってくる。
その構成には感心しました。

主人公の少年は、無力で、
しかし何事かを成そうとする「青春の葛藤」や「無茶苦茶感」がある意味リアルです。
主人公の受身の姿勢は読む人によっては、理解できないかも知れません。
しかし、現実とはそんなもの。リアルに精神的成長を遂げる主人公が描かれていると思いました。
