著者は動物行動学の世界的な権威でノーベル賞を受賞しているとのことであり、タイトルから考えても、犬がどのように人間に飼われる至ったかに関わる学術的な書物と思って手に取ったところ、犬や猫に関するエッセーに近い非常に読みやすい内容であった。

但し通常のエッセーと異なり、著者の動物に対する学識や鋭い観察眼が至るところに表れており、普段何気なく見過ごしている犬や猫の動作の意味や、彼らの人や他の動物に対する接し方や反応が詳しく描かれていて興味深いし、ペットを飼っている人やこれから飼おうとする人には参考になると思われる内容が多い。

自分は生まれてからペットを飼ったことがないが、犬の主人に対する献身ぶりは涙ぐましいほどのものであり、また著者の犬や猫（著者は両方のよいところを同等に評価している）に対する愛情も伝わってきて、自分もいつかはペットを飼える環境に引っ越して、犬や猫を飼いたいと強く思った。

私の大好きな本の一冊です。作者の動物行動学者のローレンツ氏は、本当に動物を愛している人で、この本に出てくるたくさんの犬とのエピソードは心を温かくさせます。ただの愛情物語ではなく、動物行動学者の権威であるローレンツ氏の書いたこの本は、学術的にもたいへん興味をそそります。文章も魅力的で、いやみがなく素直に入っていけます。私はこの本を読んで犬を飼うことを決心し、この本に出てくる彼の飼い犬の名前を付けました。オススメです！

　インプリンティング（刷り込み）を発見した動物学者として名高いローレンツ。本書はローレンツが、自身の飼育した犬たちとの思い出を語ったもの。
　たくさんの犬が愛情を持って描き出されている。微笑ましいエピソード、悲しい出来事、感動的だったことなど、それぞれの話がローレンツの深い愛情を示している。しかし、その愛情が、私にはどこか異質なものに感じられて仕方がなかった。日本人の犬への愛情とはかけ離れたものがあるように思った。ローレンツは常に犬を人間に従属するものとして扱っている。決して、人間と同等の存在としては認めていない。これはおそらく、自然を人間の支配対象としてみる西洋人の感覚なのだろう。
　犬への愛情という面にも、こうした意識があらわれてしまうとは、不思議なものだ。
