本書は，カウンセリングを専門とする気鋭の学究によるフランクルの業績を解説した労作である。フランクルのロゴテラピーは，彼のナチスの強制収容所での体験から生まれたのでなく，それ以前から続けられていた真摯な人間の価値の探求によって育まれたものであることが力説されている。また，ここでは他の理論とロゴテラピーの関係が記述されていて，ロゴテラピーの発展過程とその位置づけについて多くを教えてくれる。
評者は，精神科医であり，20数年前からフランクルの著作に親しんでいるものであるが，それでも本書から新たに多くのことを学ぶことが出来たことを付言しておく。

「どんな時にも人生には意味がある。」「人生は常にあなたに問いを発していて、あなたに発見されるのを待っている」この言葉ほど私を勇気づけてくれたものはありません。自分のやりたいこと、どう生きるかが分かりづらい現代において、何か大切な、勇気づけられるメッセージをいただいたと感謝しております。内容的にも大変読みやすく、心理学にあまり詳しくない私でもじっくりと味わいながら読むことができました。

特に若い世代の方々に読んでいただきたい１冊です。

　読書の楽しみとは、図書館で目当ての本を借り、ついでにもう１冊面白そうだからという理由で、借りた本のほうが、目当ての本よりも面白かったということが、えてしてあり得るということである。その意味では、フランクルは気にはなっていたが、なかなか読む機会を得なかったものである。それにしても、フランクルの「夜と霧」を読んだのは、もう何年前のことだろうか。この本から、彼の思考の形成が、収容所体験以前に始まっていたこと、森田療法との類似点、実存的思考は超越者を指向せざるを得ないことなど教えられることが多かった。
　しかしながら、P302　著者の「「人生の意味」を私たちに「送り届けてくれる」その「送り主」を、この「宇宙」であると、秩序に満ちたコスモスそのものであると考えてはどうだろうかと」」という主張には賛成できない。「超越性」を人格的なものや、ある「実体」と措定する必要はないのである。「無」である「超越性」が問いかけてくると、私は考える。

いすれにしても分かりやすく記載され、フランクルの著作集の紹介や、日本での批判など、痒いところに手が届く内容となっている。興味のある方には、お薦めしたい書物である。
