一週間後に結婚式を控えているキャロラインは弟と共に長年音信不通
だった兄に会うためにスコットランドに向かいます。
吹雪に見舞われ、とうとう借り物の車が動かなくなってしまったとき、
兄を亡くしたばかりの青年と出会います。
父の連れ子として今の家庭があり、しかし父が亡くなったことで継母の
ダイアナは再婚を決意し、弟をカナダに連れて行こうとする…。
ピルチャーお得意の複雑な家庭環境。
決して悪い人たちではないのだけれど、やはり血は水よりも濃いって
所をしっかり押さえています。

なぜ、ピルチャー女史は、こんな温かな物語を紡ぎだせるのでしょう。
読み終わって、「よかったぁ〜＾＾」と思わなかったストーリーはありません。

主人公のキャロラインとオリヴァが出会うのですが、途中まで、
「ピルチャー女史にしては、ストーリーが寒くないですか？？？」と感じていました。
オリヴァは、女好きの冷ややかな人間なのかなと。
それが、冬景色から雪解けの季節の爽快さのような変化が、ある時を境として人が変わるのです。
人間の心の変化・雪解け。優しさの生まれる瞬間。
こういう描写を読むと、人って変われるものだなぁ〜と思います。
忘れてはいけないのが、主人公キャロラインの弟ジョディー。
彼の愛らしさ。彼の愛らしさが物語をまた温かなものにつなげてもいるのですねぇ〜。
