フラメンコ、その不思議な魅力の源を民俗学的、音楽的、歴史的に紐解きつつ、分析した1冊。

著者のフラメンコに対する愛情が言葉のはしばしに溢れ、あたたかみを感じつつ、歌詞のもつ根源的な意味や、フラメンコ独特の和声等、これ1冊でフラメンコにまつわる様々な知識を得ることができるという、入門書でもあり、専門書でもある。

巻末に1970年代までのかなり詳しいアーティスト名鑑と、代表的なレコード目録があり（合わせて60ページを超える！）資料としても便利なものになっている。

　日本は、世界的に見てもフラメンコ先進国（？）だとどこかで読んだことがある。しかし、ほとんどのフラメンコ愛好家たちは、その外見だけしか見ていないのではあるまいか。それはそれで、趣味なのだからよい。けれども、もしこの本を手に取れば、さらにフラメンコの「深い井戸の底」に引きずり込まれることはまず疑いない。
　但し、この本はほとんどフラメンコのカンテについて書かれている。従って、カンタオル、カンタオラを目指している人にはとても勉強になるが、バイラオル、バイラオラを志している人には、直接的な技術には結びつかないだろう。しかし、フラメンコ各曲のリズム、歌詞、節回し等がどこからきたのか、どういう意味をもつのかを知りたいのであれば、非常に有益である。改めてフラメンコの奥深さを思い知らされる。
　ひとつ難点を言えば、著者自身も認めていることであるが、学術書、体系書の類ではないので、記述に統一性が見られない面もある。
