不条理な世界を描かせたら天下一品の名手イーリイの傑作処女短編集です。本書を読んで感じるのは、著者はアメリカ人作家なのですが、まるでイギリス作家のような手触りの非常に端正な小説世界が読み取れるという事と、文豪アントニー・バージェスに絶賛された事が示すように奇想で驚かせるだけではなく文学的にも基本がしっかりとしているという点です。彼の描く世界は一見すると至極まともなのですが、注意深く考えて見ると微かに綻びが見えてくる歪んだアンバランス・ゾーンなのです。その反面、不条理とはいっても結末は十分に自然且つ論理的であり、読者を喜ばせようと意図して無理矢理つけられた落ちはありません。ですから、人によっては少し物足りない印象を持ってしまう部分もあるだろうなと思いますので、その面で万人向けでなく読者を選ぶ職人気質の作家と言えるでしょう。『理想の学校』の静かに進行する狂気の姿。『ヨットクラブ』は、金持ちの道楽として現実にありそうな恐ろしさ。『タイムアウト』は、正義感の強い老人が妥協せざるを得ない憂鬱。『隣人たち』は、子供を見せない奇妙な夫婦を、執拗に追い詰めて行く人々の妄執。『大佐の災難』の何が真実か確信が揺らぐ瞬間のぞっとする恐怖。『オルガン弾き』は、マッドな展開が不協和音を呼ぶ、不可思議な人間の嗜好を、それぞれ見事に描いています。全１５編、非日常の世界に起こる奇妙奇天烈な出来事を淡々と冷静に語る枯れた作風が持ち味の著者ならではの名人芸を、どうぞたっぷりとお楽しみ下さい。

非常に毒のあるブラックユーモア短編集でとても楽しく読めた。だいたいはニヤリとさせられる種類の笑いだが、ところどころ異様にテンションが高い。「面接」などはコントとして十分上演できそうな短編だった。似たような作家をあげるとするならロアルド・ダールだが、ダールがちょっとクスリをやってハイになったような感じ。

それぞれ違う味の短編（「タイムアウト」は中編ですが）で、面白いです。
共通しているのはじわじわと沸いてくる作品への興味。強烈なショックというよりも、じっくり読める短編が多かった。
判りやすいオチがついているものはイマイチで、オチが無いというか、ストンと丸く収まってしまっている気にさせられてしまうものの方が作品自体の回転の速さとは裏腹に底からじわっとくる妙味を楽しめる。
