この小説を見ずして映画は語れません。まず一読して欲しい!どこの章から読んでも内容はアフリカでの作者の日々の移ろいが淡々と綴られていてハズレはありません。デイネーセンの想像力の豊かさ、とりわけユーモアの絶妙さにはクスッと笑わされてしまう事多しでした。

彼女は困難な状況に遭遇しても決して悲嘆にくれたり泣き言ひとつ言わずにその現状を受け入れ、独特のブラックユーモアで切り抜けてしまう強い女性。そしてその根底にはいつもすべてをありのまま受け入れようとする愛情深さが潜んでいる気がする。

「アフリカは私の歌を知っているだろうか。」と話す彼女はすでにアフリカと同化しており、例え彼の地を去ろうとも心はずっとアフリカの雄大な大地に在り続けると思う。センチメンタルになり過ぎずに恋人の死を運命だと受けとめてンゴング丘陵にデニスの墓を創る章では、哀しみを人に見せず気丈に振る舞う姿に自立した凜々しい女性像をみた気がします。知的な文体にぜひ触れてみて下さい。

　言わずと知れた『愛と哀しみの果て』の原作です。 　あの映画ほど原作を冒涜しているものはない、と憤りながらも涙してしまいます。 　今ではパブロフの犬のようにテーマ曲を聴いただけで、涙が出ます。 　原作はセンチメンタルでもないし、男として生きようと決心したディネーセンの決意もみてとれます。

　最初は読みにくいかもしれませんが、つまみ食いのように読んでいくうちにディネーセンの手のうちに入ってしまいます。 　もちろん、西洋からみたアフリカという制限はあるでしょうが、当時の人を責めても何も出てきません。 　サリンジャーの『ライ麦畑』の中にもこの本が出てきますから、どうぞ一緒に読んでみてください。

　そして、映画の素晴らしい映像を楽しみましょう。

とにかく風景描写が美しいが、それにとどまらず、
日々のさまざまな事件に向けられた著者の眼差しも秀逸で、
ほとんど古典的と呼びうるような風格を備えている。

きわめつけは、結末近くの「丘陵の墓」の章だろうか。
親友であり愛人でもあった英国人男性、
デニス・フィンチ＝ハットンとの交渉が迎えた無残な結末が、
徹底的に感傷を排した文章で書き留められ、
それゆえにいっそう、運命的な悲劇性を感じさせる。

著者のアフリカ理解に時代的な制約はあろうし、
厳密な意味での小説ではないかもしれないが、
ゆうに世界文学の名に値すると言えるだろう。
