　ボルヘスの個性が出ていて面白い本です。

　中国の鳳凰が「中国のフェニクス」と記されていたり、「ポオの想像した動物」とか「カフカの想像した動物」、「ルイスの想像した動物」等々の項目が含まれていたりして、古典的な幻獣ばかりではないところも、微笑ましいと感じる人が多い筈。

「ユーウォーキー」だの「過去を称える者たち」、「熱の生き物」などといった、ちょっと珍しい架空の動物も載っています。御用とお急ぎでない方は是非お読みになることをお奨めします。

　とはいえ、南米人のことですから、日本の空想上の動物に関しては全くもって「無知」に等しいのも否定し難い事実です（ヤマタノオロチが出てきますが、古い本からの孫引きでしかありません）。 　また訳者が古典ギリシア語の知識がないせいか、「ロドス島」をわざわざ「ロードス島」と誤記している点も気になります。

　知っている人は知っている。知らない人はまったく知らない。古今東西、世界中の想像上の生き物を蒐集し、まとめた一冊です。原典にまでさかのぼっている調べているところといい、これはまさに「蒐集」と書くにふさわしい。
　バハムート、バンシー、バジリスク、ベヒーモス、ケンタウロス、ケルベロス、チェシャ猫、キマイラ、八岐大蛇、エルフ、フェアリー、ノーム、ゴーレム、ハンババ、クジャタ、マンドレイク、ミノタウロス、セイレーン、スフィンクス、饕餮（トウテツ）などなど。
　スフィンクスやセイレーン、ケンタウロスのようなわりと知られている（？）怪物たちだけでなく、東洋と西洋の竜のイメージの違いや中国の饕餮（トウテツ）まで触れられているのがすさまじい。ちなみに饕餮（トウテツ）は「大食らい」の意味で、人間の悪徳の化身として戒めるためにも使われるそうです。

古今東西の空想の怪物が集められた辞典なので
内容的に古くなるものではないはずなのですが
きちんと古くなっています（笑）。

知りたいところが微妙に書いていないような印象もあり
手放しで楽しめる内容とは言えません。
情報だけを求めるなら、日本の作家が書いた
比較的に新しめの同種の事典がオススメだと思います。

というマイナス要素を差し引いても、
なんといっても古典です。ボルヘスです。
他の本では代用できない雰囲気があります。
それを求める方にはぜひ。
