　ハロウィーンの夜、少年たちが迷い込んだ暗闇のお祭りの世界。たくさんの素敵なSFを書いた作家ブラッドベリが手がけた児童向けの長編です。ジョージ・ムニャイニの白黒線描の挿絵も、お話の一寸怖そうでどきどきさせる雰囲気を良く伝えてくれています。

　10月も終わりになると南瓜の顔が並ぶのが、いつの間にか日本でもクリスマスと同じに年中行事の一つになってしまいました。このお話の始まるアメリカの町でも、子供たちは骸骨や魔女の衣装をつけ、走り回ります。でも、ハロウィーンってなに？

　このお話の中、お祭りの衣装をつけたまま、子供たちはハロウィーンの生まれた背景となるような昔の世界に旅をし、それを知ることになるのです。世界中のどこでも、人は死を考え、恐怖、悲しみを知るようになると、それを乗り越えるために更にいろいろなことを考えたのでしょう。生きるための工夫の一つが、形を変えてハロウィーンのようなお祭りになっていく。そんな風にこのお話は、暗闇の怖さ、死への恐れ、宗教の始まり、を自然に考えさせてくれます。
　怖いような題材ですが、死ぬことをきちんと考えることでもっと楽しく生きられるというメッセージと、なにより少年たちのピチピチした行動が楽しいお話にしてくれています。

　「昼と夜。夏と冬だ、諸君。種まき時と刈り入れ時。生と死。それらが全部ひとつになったのが、ハロウィーンだ。」「人々も長生きするようになり、時間の余裕もでき、死は遠のき、恐怖は斥けられ、ついには一年のうちのとくべつの何日かだけ、夜と夜明け、春と秋、生まれることと死ぬことを考えるようになる。」
　教会の屋根にいるガーゴイルが、「古い神々、古い夢、古い悪夢、古い考え、用のなくなった、仕事にあぶれたそういう古いものみんなを呼び集めて仕事を与えた」というのは本当かどうかわかりませんが、お寺の四天王の足元の天邪鬼もそうなのでしょうか。そして、 日本のお祭りはハロウィーンと比べてどうなのでしょう。似たようなところがあるでしょうね。そういうこともつい、考えてしまうお話です。

少し怖いんだけどわくわくする、ハロウィンの雰囲気がたっぷりつまった本。イラストがとても良いです。
ハロウィンは日本ではただのお祭り騒ぎのようになってますが、これを読むと私たちの知らないハロウィンを感じることが出来ます。ハロウィンにまとわりつく死のイメージ。どこか滑稽な死の祭日です。ブラッドベリといったらSF、って感じですが、これはファンタジー。「トリック・オア・トリート」は日本ではあまりやりませんがハロウィンの雰囲気が好きな方は是非読んだ方が良いです。
