１９２８年、イリノイ州グリーン・タウンの夏。ダグラス少年が出会った、数十もの、生死にかかわる大事件。こんな夏は二度と来ないだろう。だけど、タンポポワインを口に含めば、この夏のすべてがいきいきとよみがえってくるだろう。

ブラッドベリの文章は小説でありながら詩に近い。ぜひ英語で、言葉に含まれるほのかなイメージも一緒に味わっていただきたい。短編の連作形式。

　1928年の夏は、ダグラス・スポールディングの指揮により始まり、彼が眠りにつき終わった。新しいテニスシューズは彼を軽やかに運び、やがて重く地面に貼りついていく。テーブルは野外に運ばれ、また持ち込まれる。朝を向かえ夜が忍び寄る。ダグラスは自分が生きていることに気づき、やがて死ぬことを知る。その年は特別な夏だった。

　ブラッドベリを読むのは根性が要ります。暇つぶしに読んだり、斜め読みしたりを許さないからです。本に集中して、一つの単語、一つの文章、一つの章、全体を理解するために全力を出さなければなりません。
　けど、そうするだけの価値はあります。心の奥底に横たわってる根源的な何かを揺さぶり、高揚させ、不安に陥れ、哀しくさせ、気だるく心安らかにしてくれます。自分の真ん中で何かを感じることが出来るのです。
　この本もそんな作品です。

世界で一番好きな作家の、世界で一番好きな本です。
子供から少し大人へと歩き始めた頃の、憧れやせつなさがよみがえります。
この本を読み終えた時、いくつもの季節を一緒に通り過ぎて来たような気持ちに
なりました。
いつまでもピュアな心を失わない大人に読んで欲しい本です。
