宇宙や物理に関する本は最近たくさん出版されていて、この分野が好きな人には読まなくてはいけないような本がたくさんあり過ぎるように感じるのですが、このブライアン・グリーン氏による「エレガントな宇宙」と本作を読めば十分と思えるぐらいベストではないでしょうか。（因みに、エレガントな宇宙はテレビ放映によるＤＶＤ版も存在しますが、これはお勧めできない出来です。）
　
例えば、サイモン・シン氏の「宇宙創成」は読んだけど今一つ…、だけどスティーブン・ホーキングの「ホーキング、未来を語る」は理解が及ばない…、といった方（私なんですけど）には重宝する本だと思います。全てをすぐ理解はできませんが、数回読んでも結構飽きなくて、通勤時間や寝る前のお伴としてかなり重宝しています。人によって様々だと思いますが、部分的にでも「なるほど！」と唸るような箇所が幾つか出てくると思います。　
　
ただ、一度に全ては理解し難いので何度も読み返すことになるのですが、特に最近ではかなりコンセンサスになりつつあるインフレーション論は予め理解しておいた方が、読んでいてスルッと行くかもしれません。現状の宇宙の状態や物質構成をうまく説明するインフレーション論については、出版物「ニュートン」や佐藤勝彦教授の本が良いと思うのですが、私もこの「宇宙が〜」を読みながら予めインフレーション論について「分かったような気」になっておいて良かった！と思ってしまいました。まぁ、どんなことであれ予め理解が多ければ読んでいて楽しいということなんですが…。
　
特に、最近議論されている「ブレーン宇宙論」については、本書でようやくイメージが「湧いたような気」がしました。この辺は、グリーン氏の作家としての才能でしょう。今まで、ブレーン世界による「我々は宇宙にある膜にいるのかも知れない」という理論はさっぱりイメージ出来なかったのですが、グリーン氏の本作によれば、「我々の通常認識の３次元の中で、映画ハイビジョン画像を２次元として見ているように、多次元宇宙の中に３次元と認識する我々の世界が漂っているのかも」といった趣旨のくだり、「なるほどー！」と唸りました。まぁ、全編に渡ってたとえ話が多くて辟易する面もあるのですが、外国作家の作品はそうした面が多いと割り切って、何回かに分けて読み返せば、すごく分かったような気にさせてくれる本と言えますね。

いったい何が言いたいのか、書物としてのポリシーが無い。グダグダと意味のない話が物理用語を使って並べてあるだけ。この上巻は量子論と、アインシュタインの相対性論をごちゃごちゃと。はっきり言って眠くなる。だから、値段単価はお値打ちかも、読み切るのに時間がかかるから。
