本を愛する人なら誰でも思い当たる節のあるエピソードが次々と出てきて、嬉しくなってしまいます。
著者は、子供の頃父親の蔵書を積み木代わりにして遊んでいたという筋金入りの本好き。両親は作家、本人も結婚相手も作家なのだそうです。

「そうそう、こういうことするな」と思うような「本好きの他愛のない癖」を寄せ集めて、こんな面白い読み物にしてしまうのは、さすが作家のエッセイだと唸りました。

　読後、何かほのぼのした気分に包まれた。幸せな家族の本に関するエピソードが伝わってきたからだ。
　夫と本を通じ恋をし、本人のみならずお互いの蔵書をももめながらも何とか整理（結婚）させ、コロラド川探検の本をグランドキャニオンでキャンプをしながら（つまり本の舞台となった現場で）、結婚してからも古典を夜ベッドで朗読してもらい、誕生日には趣のある古書店に招待される。
　本好きには羨ましい夫婦生活に思えること間違いなしです。
　英米の本や歴史についての知識がないと分かりにくい箇所がありますが、内一つの章だけについている注釈だらけの文章は、親切というよりもむしろ野暮なので、分からない読者もスノッブな気分に浸って読み進むのが良いでしょう。
　巻末に索引が載っていますが、書名はともかく、人名はわざわざキング、スティーブンと姓名の順に逆転して表記している点も併せて、必要なのか？と首を傾げました。
