動物の利他行動のやさしい解説書に人への応用に関するコメントを加えたような内容．
ただどうも大幅に原書を抄訳してあるらしくどうもスカスカの印象が強い．本の売れ行きとか定価とかいろいろ理由はあるのだろうが残念である．

中身的には動物の利他行動に関して広い範囲をカバーして4種類に分けてきちんと解説できているところは好ましい．この手の解説はどうしても血縁利他と互恵的利他行動に的を絞って解説してしまいがちになるが，単に得だから参加するという行動をきちんと｢副次的相互扶助」として解説しているので一般の人には理解が容易であると思われる．

本書の特徴としては著者がデビッドスローンウィルソンの弟子だけあって現代的群淘汰についての一章が詳しい．学説史もコンパクトで要点を得ていてよい．砂漠のハキリアリの協同的な巣創設に見られる女王間の協力を群淘汰からくるものとして扱っている．それがなぜ群淘汰としてしか説明できないかについては残念ながら詳しい説明がない．(原書にはあるのかも，一応私としてはこれはもう少し調べてみないと)．

動物の利他行動についてとりあえずさわりだけ読みたい人向け．
