アメリカという国は細菌や微生物研究で第一級の国であり、その管理体制も確立していると考えていた私には、横っ面を殴られたような衝撃がある。
確かに登場するプランクトンの毒性は人間にとって脅威だ。バラスト水による海洋生物の移動の事実を知っているなら、対岸の火事で終らないことが解かるだろう。
だが、本書の本当の恐怖は行政機構の無能にある。

確かに危険を叫ぶだけでは狼少年でしかない。しかし、行政機関として禄を食むのであれば、せめて住人の生命を守るための最短パスくらい用意できないのか、と腹立たしい。
アメリカでさえ、これである。
日本の行政を考えると、足元の深淵にゾッとする。

実は今年の夏に、私の家で急に発生しました。
調べてくれる人がいたので、原因がわかりましたが、ぶち込み型の濾過式酸素吸入器に付着して、それを高い温度が毒をどんどん発生。水槽を洗ったばかりの日に、ぶち込み方が外の人の靴跡に触れなかったらおきなかった悲劇でした。人事ではないことを、よく知っておかねばなりません。

本書は主に２部構成となっている。

前半は筆者が猛毒物質を産生するプランクトンを実験の失敗から偶然発見し、学会での発表に至るまでの経過。
その過程でくだんのプランクトンの生態について克明に解説されていて、その内容は研究者だけでなく、私達一般人でも大変興味を引く内容。（やさしい言葉で書かれていますので安心。）２０以上の変態が可能と聞くとそれが単細胞生物とはだれが思えるだろうか。

後半は、そのプランクトンの発表が認められ、行政に対して具体的に働きかけていく過程について記されている。一介の研究者が政治の場で意見を言い、政府機関と戦っていく様子は多くの学生や研究職志望者には大変勇気付ける内容ではないでしょうか。様々な葛藤が述べられていて、きっと多くの院生、ゼミ生にとって共感できる内容だと思います。

中古本の価格が大変安いので読んでおくと必ずプラスになると思います。
