３年ほど前に、佐野藤右衛門さんの庭に愛犬シーザーと散歩中に紛れ込んで
「おむすび」を頬張っている時に櫻守の法被を着た旦那さん風の人が通りかかり一言「兄ちゃん庭にゴミを捨てて汚さんといてや」と。思わず立ち上がり
「はい」と答えました。なぜか非難されたような気まずさは感じないで、自然を大事にしている人だなという感じを受けました。

翌日ある場所で「ミドリのフォーラム」があり佐野藤右衛門さんの講演会があると言うので参加しました。佐野さんは庭師として高名であり、気難しい人と
想像しておりました。登場した佐野さんは昨日のおじさんでした。
その時の講演と同じ語り口でこの本は櫻、自然について書かれている環境保護の本です。

そもそも、私は桜が好きだ。ソメイヨシノといわず、山桜といわず、とにかく好きだ。あの淡いピンクの花びらが、風に吹かれてゆらゆらする姿は、何物にも代え難い、本当に「風情」とは正しくこれだ、と思わせてくれる。

その大好きな桜に一生を捧げ、否、何代にもわたって愛し続ける人がいる。それが、佐野さんである。この本に語られた佐野さんの言葉は、単に「桜守」の技術論ではなく、私たち一人一人が、桜を鏡として、いかに生きるかを示した貴重な教訓だ。
桜を愛でつ、佐野さんの言葉を胸に、今年も勇気がわいてくる。

今から5年ほど前、家を建てて小さな洋風の庭作りをはじめたときに、種々の庭造りの本を読みましたが、総論的に、最も参考になったのが本書でした。

｢庭は手入れではなく守りですわ｣
の言葉に象徴されるように、人間が植物を育てるのではなく、植物が育つのを見守ることが肝要。

各論的には日本庭園向けの松、梅、楓、桜が中心ですので、あまり参考にはなりませんでしたが、精神論的には大きな収穫を得ました。

桜の花が咲くころに、小さな庭の陽だまりで、うららうららと本書を読み返すのが楽しみです。

いろんな物事が進化する一方で、人間はどんどん退化しているんじゃないかと思いました。
仕事もそうですが、生き方の本質がここにあるような気がします。
