生物学者ｊ・スコット・ターナーの著書。
ダーヴィニズムとネオ・ダーヴィニズムが説明できなかった進化の隙間を解こうとする仮説を解りやすく紹介してくれている。
インテリジェント・デザイン論（以下ＩＤ論。知的存在による生命の創造）を批判しつつ、生命が自己デザインするという説を展開している。
眼球のしくみなどを上げて単純な進化論では説明できない部分があること、そのことが、ＩＤ論などが台頭する隙間となってきていることを踏まえて、進化論に目的論的展開を加えている。
要するに生命体が「この方向に進化すればうまくいくかも」という探索的能力を持って進化するとしている仮説だが、刺激的で面白い。あまり消化できていないので読み直す必要があるが、現段階で既にお薦めです。

生命はあたかも“意図的なデザイン”を持っているように見える。それはなぜなのか？
この問いに答えるには、遺伝子中心に進化を説明するネオダーウィニズムだけでは限界があるという。そこで著者は、生理学的過程（ホメオスタシス）という新たな視点を導入することでダーウィニズムをより一歩推し進めようとしている。
著者のアイディアの面白さもさることながら、生物学の興味深い（そして新しい）知見がふんだんに盛り込まれているので、生物学の世界観を広げてくれる本である。生物の進化に興味のある人にはぜひ読んでもらいたい。
