　普段当たり前だと思って気にも止めないようなことが実は、生存のために必要な能力であることが分かった。例えば、他者の視線に気付き、その視線が自分を見ているかどうか、そしてそれが敵意を持ったものかまたは他の目的があるのかなどを瞬時に判断する能力は通常私達は苦もなく利用している。また、他者が自分と同じものを見ているかどうか知ることも私達には簡単なことである。

　著者はMindreading（人の心を知る能力）は人間誰にでも備わっているとしている。だからこそ私達は目の前の事実とは違う冗談や皮肉を理解したり、他者が何も言わなくてもその心理状態を推測したりすることができるのだ。そしてこれが欠けている状態が自閉症･･･著者の言葉で言うのならmindblind･･･であると著者は書いている自閉症が通常の発達とどう違うのかを非常に分かりやすく解説している。子供の意識や発達の段階などもためになり、また思い当たる点も多く興味深い。

　人間と高等類人猿の比較では、人間にしかない能力という観点から違いを解説し、進化の違いを論じている。例えば、手話の習得などによって言葉を理解するチンパンジーやゴリラなどはほとんど自分たちの欲求を伝える以外には発話することがないという。人は欲求を伝える以外にも実に様々なことを考え、そしてそれを言葉にして他者に伝えようとする。

　私達が他者と意思の疎通をはかれるのも、言語を習得できるのも、まさに自然淘汰と進化の結果であるということがこの本を読むと大変よく理解できる。

涙を流している人を見た時、私たちは自然と、直観的に「あ、悲しいのだな」とか「何かに怯えているんだいるんだろうか」とか考えてしまいます。つまりこれは「涙を流す」というような観察可能な状態（あるいは行動）を「悲しい、怖い」といった目には見えない心の状態に原因帰属しているのですが、私たちにとって当たり前すぎるほどに当たり前なこの「心の状態から行動を解釈する」という働きが実は非常に複雑なものであり、かつ生きていくためには不可欠な働きであるということが大変わかりやすく説明されています。この働きが視線や意図の検出といった下位システムから構成されていること、脳の機能単位の一つであること、進化的な起源を持つこと、そして心の状態を解することができない自閉症という不思議で悲しい障害が存在すること。こうした事柄を知るにつれて私たちに備わっている読心能力、すなわち「心の理論」という素晴らしい働きについての知見を深めることができます。進化心理学の入門書としてもおすすめです。

　最近では一段落がついてだいぶ下火になっていますが、それでも著者はじめ、プレマックやパーナーなど多くの研究者が、人間（霊長類）が「他者の心」をどのように理解するのかということに関して、たぶんに示唆の富んだ研究を提示してくれたことは、心理学史においてそれなりの重きを置かれても良いことかと思います。そういった一連の「心の理論」研究のひとつの総括ということが、この著書の意義の一つとなっているのではないでしょうか。

　重要な書ではあるのですが、和訳にはところどころびっくりさせられます。ある現象に対するメタファーとして、チェスが話題にのぼる場面があるのですが、「ボーンやナイト、ビショップや城（！！）…」なんて出てきたときには吹いてしまいました。ほかにも、編者の専門外と思われる領域の話では、首をひねりたくなるような表現が多々見られます。

一冊の本としては多少難があると思い、厳しく評価させてもらいました。
