　ヒト以外の動物たちは、ヒトとおなじように「意識」をしているのだろうか。著者は、人間が思っているほど動物の知的能力は劣っているわけではないということを、過去の実験結果や脳のしくみなどのさまざまなエビデンスを根拠に主張している。たとえばハトはある面でヒトよりも優れている認知能力をもっているという話を知ると、動物を見る目も少しかわってくるかもしれない。
　本書は、動物たちの認知能力の幅広さを学ぶとともに、われわれ人間の動物への接し方について社会的な視点からも考えるきっかけを与えている。ただ、著者の言いたいことは、慎重な記述にこだわるあまり、いくぶんぼやけてしまっている感もぬぐえない。
