一時期バトラーを構築主義、セジウィックを本質主義と分類し、バトラーを持ち上げる言説が一部に流通していたが、本書を読めばバトラーとセジウィック、それほど異なった地点に立っているわけではないことがわかる。

特にセジウィックを本質主義とするのは誤り。安易な構築主義が逆に同性愛者に対する抑圧的言説を、それこそ「構築」してしまう危険性について、セジウィックが慎重だっただけだ、ということ。もちろんバトラーの構築主義はそんなものとは大違いだが。

基本的にバトラーが哲学者なのに対して、セジウィックは英文学者としてのスタンスでフーコーを読み直し、男性同士のホモソーシャルな欲望を「ホモセクシュアル」と読み取られることへの恐怖から、同性愛に対する抑圧的言説が生まれたとする。またそうして根拠を保証された男性共同体が女性を社会的交換の道具として物象化していく過程も、フーコーの読み直しの結果として提示されている。

だがこの本の最大の魅力はやはり、セジウィックによるメルヴィル、ワイルド、ニーチェ、ジェイムズetcの読解とそこから垣間見える新たな文学史の可能性だろう。「ホモソーシャル」という概念がその後の文学研究に与えた影響は、未だに消化しきれていない。
