水村美苗『日本語が亡びるとき』（以下『亡びるとき』）にまつわる論考は15本ほど収録されている。水村氏のインタビューもある。「詩と批評」のユリイカと縁遠いところで生きていても、さらに考えを深めたい人は必携。

『亡びるとき』を読んだ人はご存知のように、水村氏は「日本語」でもって、ごく限定した内容（「国語としての」日本語）しか意味させていない。だがタイトルだけみると確かにミスリーディングで、『（現地語としての日本語も含めて）日本語が亡びるとき』ともとれる。2月号の論者の中にも、この誤読の上で論を寄せているものもいた（というより、『亡びるとき』をまるで読まずに書いているでしょ？というツワモノもいて、水村氏の議論と無関係に日本語にまつわる自説のみを開陳していて可笑しかった）。

水村氏への反論としては福島亮太氏と坂上秋成氏の論が有力に思えた。近代日本語は大きなコストをかけて作為的に形成されたが、その際、当時の文学者は従来の日本語における漢文的文脈を切断し放棄するという犠牲を払った。水村が近代日本文学にこだわるのは、莫大なコストをかけて日本語をつくった先人の記憶が、そこにもっとも濃密に残留すると考えているからであるが、福島氏はこれに対して、先人たちに「さらにラディカルな水準で倣おうとするならば、いま必要なのはむしろ日本語の栄光の一部を捨て去り、現に賑やかで活力のある言語ないし言語感覚に一度身をもって仕えることではないだろうか」（151頁）と批判する。坂上秋成も同様に、近代文学への過剰な固執は生産性を持たぬばかりか、日本語を死なせてしまうと戒める。近代日本文学の目から見たらいかに軽薄にみえても、現在流行しているラノベやケータイ小説のようなものでも、想像力をもって接しなければいけないというわけだ（なかなか難しい課題ではある（＾＾；））
