　太宰に関して書かれた文章を拾って読んだ。「男女同権」、「桜桃」の二作品を取り上げた文章が、特に印象に残った。
　「桜桃」は、太宰が晩年にものした短篇だ。われ、山に向かいて、目を挙ぐ、という詩篇の中の一節や、涙の谷、という言葉が登場することから、太宰の信仰と結びけて論じられることが多い、と記憶している。が、この論では、現代における現実的で切実な問題と結び付けられている。太宰がダウン症の長男を持っていたことを、最近私は知った。その子が「桜桃」に登場していたことを、私はこの本と出会い、知った。「桜桃」を読んだ。
　「桜桃」にはダウン症の長男を抱えた太宰の苦しみが、障害を抱えた子を、その親が殺した、という新聞記事の抜粋とともに、切実さをもって書かれていた。冒頭と末尾にある、子供より親が大事、という有名なフレーズや、桜桃のつるをつなげたら、珊瑚の首飾りのようになるだろう、という美しい言葉を読むと、彼が抱えていた苦しみを忘れてしまう。太宰は苦しさから抜け出す錬金術を、いくつも心得ていたのかもしれない。そう言えば、彼の「浦島さん」にも、形は桜桃に似て、一つひとつ味の違う食べる酒が登場していたのではあるまいか。
　障害者にも、若者にも、一律に〈自立〉を強制する政府、自分ではまともに働くことができない人に、健常者と同等の生産性を望む政府、政府の非情な施策が不幸な事件を引き起こした、と論者は言う。私は不幸にして、発達障害という障害を抱え生まれてきた。同時に幸福にして、父親が経営者である。おかげで、食いぶちには困らない。しかし、生まれ（遺伝）も育ち（環境）も偶然でしかない。私もまた、その社会への非生産性から、一家心中、という事態を引き起こしていたかもしれない。それにまた、父の会社が倒産したならば、と考えれば、けして、私には他人事ではないのだ。太宰の奥深さを、改めて思い知らされた一冊だ。
