　『社会学の根本問題』は既に清水幾太郎によって訳されており、社会学の古典となっている。おそらくジンメル社会学を理解するうえで、最も最良のものと言えるだろう。それをなぜ今になって居安正が訳したのだろうか。一般的に新訳を出版する際には、古いものよりも優れていなければならないが、本書は全くの逆であることに驚きである。名訳ならぬ、迷訳である。おそらく居安は原文に忠実に訳したのだろうが、文章にゆとりがなく、日本語として読みやすいとは言えない。一方、清水訳は多少の意訳を含んでいるのだろうが、日本語として自然で流れるように読むことができる。両者の文学的センスの違いが顕著に出ている。もちろん、直訳気味の居安訳を好む人物もいるだろうから、判断は各自に任せたい。
　しかし、それにしても居安正によるジンメルの翻訳は残念なものが多い。ジンメルを楽しく学びたい者にとっては、居安訳に対する新訳こそが待たれるところである。
