　先日、洋書店でこの本を見つけました。一見非常に古い、ぼろぼろの本。小口までボロボロになっています。何だかよく分からなかったんですけど手にとって見れば、占いの本。1ページに一言、預言(?)が書かれていて、質問者はどこかのページを開いて答えを得る、というものです。

　その装丁が非常に気に入り、欲しくて欲しくてたまらなくなったので

「この本を今買うべきか？」
と念じてページを開いてみたところ、
「今はそれなしでやってみなさい」
とのお答え。
　素直にお言葉に従って、買うのをやめました。

　そしたらその日は年末の買い物に引きずりまわされて、荷物は重いし歩き疲れたしで、このちょっと大型の本を買ってしまっていたら、もっと大変なことになっていたでしょう。

　なるほど、預言どおり買わなくてよかった(笑)。

　ということで改めて買ってしまいました。
　正直なところ占いはそんなに信じているわけではありません。でも、この本をいじっているとそれだけで楽しいです。

　一応使い方に従って、占いたいことを念じてページを開いて見たりもしますが、その答えは占った内容の回答としてずばりのものもあれば、頓珍漢なものも返ってきます。その意味を考える、なんていうのもまた楽しい。

　すでにもう1冊注文してあります。友達へのプレゼントのつもりで。

その場の「気の流れ」で決まる占いの一種である（このジャンルには、ものすごく奥深いタロット占い、ルーン占い、易などがある）。カトリック教会が唯一認めている占いは聖書のページをランダムに開くという「聖書占い」であるが（他の占いは禁止）、この「魔法の杖」も同じ原理から成り立っている。奥深さは望むべくもないが、簡単に占えるところが味噌。しかも占い師の霊感の度合いによっては、かなり当たる。

婚約者がいた私は、この本を興味本位で手にとって、尋ねてみました。『私は彼と結婚して幸せになれますか？』出てきた答えはIs that what you really want?-あなたが求めているのものは、本当にそれですか？かなりぎくっときました。

そして数ヶ月たち、私は彼と婚約解消をしました。この本にしたがったわけではなく、本当にそうなったのです。近いうちにこの本を購入したいと考えています。
