著者は、谷崎潤一郎、川端康成、三島由紀夫といった日本文学の翻訳者：海外への紹介者としてさきがけとなったサイデンステッカー氏である。

当然のことではあるが、欧米には無い日本の文化を紹介するには苦労が伴う。たとえば「白足袋をはく」といった語句を英訳するための骨折りを「日本語らしい表現から英語らしい表現へ」（培風館）の中で氏は述べている。私はそれを30年ほど前（高校時代）に読み「世の中には文化の違いというものがある」ということを知り、いわゆるカルチャーショックを経験した。

サイデンステッカー氏は、日本に長らく住み、日本の超一級の文学者たちと交友を結んだ。アメリカナイズされる以前の日本に直接出会ったそのカルチャーショックは、他の文化について本をとおして知ることの比ではない。回顧して語られる日本、日本人、日本文学について、日本人である私たちが読むときに、既に過去のものとなり遠く霞んでいる古き好き「日本」について改めて知るよい手がかりになるものと思う。

3.0 out of 5 stars 日本文学の功労者だが、余り面白くなかった, 2008/12/21
川端康成のノーベル賞受賞の最大の要因は、サイデンステッカーの名訳であったと思う。日本文学は国内でいくら読まれていても、彼の登場以前には、日本語の話者は日本にしかいなかったため、世界的にマイナーな文学だった。ウェイリーの源氏の英訳とともに、日本文学の愛好者は彼の功績に感謝しなければならない。しかし、この自伝は余り面白くない。表面的にすぎる。色々なことがあったはずだが、あまり詳しくは触れられていない。鹿島茂先生いうところの「ドーダ」になっている。また、左翼との闘いについて余りにも大きな頁が割かれている。ＣＩＡの手先と非難されたことが一因と思うが、それにしても、今となっては歴史のひとこまとしての扱いで良かったのではないかと思われる。その一方で、原爆投下を正当なことと述べ、日本軍の野蛮さ、残虐さについて明確に言及する著者の姿勢は、政治から独立した文学者としての矜持を感じさせ、大変に面白い。
