世界には約6,000の言語がある。しかし、日本語のような巨大言語を話す我々には想像もつかないことだが、そのうち約30%は、話者数が1,000人以下であるという。そして、今世紀の間に、全言語の半数以上が死滅すると予測されているのである。実際、日本語のお隣の言語であるアイヌ語と琉球語は、ともに死滅の危機に瀕している。

本書は、保全言語学のバイブルと言っていい。なぜ言語多様性を守らなければならないのか、という問いに対する本書の解答は画期的で、示唆に富んでいる。それは単に、かけがえのないものが失われることを惜しむ、という博物学的な興味によるものではない。本書によれば、地域の環境に関する知識は先住民族の言語の中に組み込まれているのであり、「持続可能な開発」のためには先住民族の言語が不可欠だというのである。なにしろ彼らは、その環境の中で今までずっと上手くやってきたのだから。

言語多様性と生物多様性は強く相関している。そのことは、環境が異なれば文化（言語）も異なると考えれば納得がいく。低緯度地域ほど生物-言語多様性は高くなる。だから、低緯度地域においては、国家という入れ物は人間をまとめる単位としては大きすぎるのだ。近代国家というシステムは、環境の多様性の低いヨーロッパでこそ成立し得たのであり、それを世界の他の地域に押しつけてもうまくいかないのである。グローバリゼーションの行き着く果てには破滅が待っている。

では、言語多様性を守るために、我々は何をなすべきなのだろうか？そのことに対する筆者の提言は、環境問題と同じで、スローガンとして言うなら「グローバルに考え、ローカルに行動せよ」ということになる。言語の消滅は、近代化に伴う必然ではない。状況は依然として危機的であるけれども、希望の見える大きな変化が起こってきていることもまた事実なのだ。

　なんと、世界の言語のうち９割までもが絶滅の危機を迎えている。
　同じ言語を話せる者がすべて死に絶えて世界にたった一人、この言葉を話せる者はこの世にはもう自分しかない、そんな状況に置かれたら…！
　実際かくのごとき最後の一人となって言語とともに自文化の歴史の終焉とともに死んでいく、そんなケースがおびただしく続いている。

　言語の死はすなわち文化の死。言語はその土地・環境の生態系と密接に関係しており、文化の多様性は生態系の多様性と直結している。言語の死は生態系に関する知識と生態系そのものの死を意味している。この厳然たる事実は最近とみに注目されてきており、研究成果が蓄積され生態系・文化保護への応用を急がれている。

　文化の均一化、精神のモノカルチャーは人間の文化を殺すのみならず、地球の生態系をも脅かしているのだ。
　刮目して読むべし！

私のバイブル。
言語にはなぜ多様性があるのか、言語の死とは何か、言語は今どのような状態にあるのか、言語はこれからどうなるのか。。。
これらの謎に真っ向からぶつかって超新鮮な解釈と示唆で世界をリードするダニエル・ネトルとスザンヌ・ロメイン。
かっこいい。
