低侵襲、低コスト、短時間3拍子そろった胸部X線写真の臨床的意義は高い。その胸部X線写真の入門書として定評がある本書。本文は長々とした文章ではなく、すべて括弧埋め形式の1センテンスとなっている。大切なポイントを繰り返し提示し、知らず知らずのうちに頭に入ってくる。アトラス的な使い方ではなく、通読して読影法の全体像をつかむことを目的としている。

私が医学部の学生だった20数年前、呼吸器科の教官はFelsonの本（厚いfull version）を原書で通読するよう指導していたが、学生が胸部X線写真だけに長い時間を費やすわけにはいかず、私は読まなかった。その代償は医師になってから長く尾を引き、胸部X線写真の読影はいつまで経っても自信がもてなかった。いつかは基本だけでも押さえておかねば、という思いが長くあったが、医師になってから専門外の勉強をする余裕などなかった。門外漢は「医師としてのminimun requirement」について気楽なことを言うけれど、初期研修は体力勝負でじっくり本を読む余裕に乏しく（私の場合は多少違ったが、専攻科の勉強に忙しかった）、また、専門医になってからは、専門医としての仕事だけで十分に忙しいのである。

本書は胸部X線写真の見方について、ごく基本のところを解説した本である。私は研修医に本書の評価を尋ねた上で購入し、心技体充実した瞬間を捉え、連休の1日半を使って一気に読了した。学生にはこれで十分、また、専門外の臨床医にとっても、恥をかかない程度の知識としてはこれで足りると思う。研修医の評価どおりの良書であった。

胸部X線読影の教本は沢山存在しますが、どれもこれも読みにくい。放射線科医には易し過ぎ、一般内科医には難しすぎる。この本は、見開き2ページを1単位として、穴埋め形式でストレスを感じることなく読み進められます。通読するのに、3日あればいいのではないでしょうか。国家試験を目の前にした、医学生や研修医が胸部X線を学ぶのに、最適と思います。文句無く、５つ星。
