本書の表題となったABCトランスポーターとは現在まで最も重要と目されている運び屋たんぱく質。ABCとはATP Binding Cassetの略称。細胞膜上の存在するたんぱく質の仲間で、アミノ酸配列がよく似たATP（アデノシン三リン酸）結合領域がカセットのように挿入されていることからこの名前がある。
本書はこうしたABCトランスポーターの最新の知見を専門家が解説した教科書。抗がん剤の排出ポンプMDR1やイオンチャンネルなどをそれぞれについて専門に研究する著者らが解説している。
