出版社も著者も違うが、先に発売された「世界動物大図鑑―ANIMAL」にかなり似通った図鑑。こちらの方が翻訳の品位が高く読みやすい。また、コラムが充実しており、動物好きなら子供も大人も興味をそそる内容である。

　序文には「自然に関する本はいずれ改訂されるさだめにある。それは、今も続く新種や新事実の発見と、絶滅の危惧による」という内容がある。
　この図鑑には、序文のとおり、実に新しい情報と、失われゆく種の情報が、あたりまえのことのように掲載されている。「XXってこういう生き物なんだ」という平和的な動物情報をしっかりと載せることだけでは満足せず、「DNAの分析によって進化や分類の考え方が変わった」ことや、「この5年間で激減したカメの、現在世界中で行われている保護活動」を、具体的に教えてくれる。鳥類の分類方法なんかも、じつに新しい。既存の資料をまとめ直すだけでは、決して作れなかった図鑑だとわかる。
　さらに、ジョン・グールドを思わせる、緻密で美しいイラストと、絶妙の瞬間を狙った写真も盛りだくさん。2000点以上掲載されているらしい。幸福に瞳を潤ませるパイソンが、悟り顔のネズミをいざ飲み込まんとする瞬間の写真などは絶妙で、こういった画像だけでも高額の価値が充分ある。
　文章も、翻訳モノ図鑑にありがちな不自然さがなく、読みやすい。
　いいものはいい、と実感できる動物図鑑。私は、広辞苑の隣に据えている。

微生物、植物以外の動物が載っている。種別が多いが一種類の内容については大雑把。
記載されている動物ついてデータがすべて載っていない。身近にいる動物について調べようとしても載っていない。
購入はお勧めできない。
