「文学界」に掲載された「日本の橋」とその他の著作によって、中村光夫とともに保田が第一回池谷信三郎賞を受けたのは昭和十一年、二十七歳の時だった。同作品を巻頭に「誰ケ袖屏風」ほか四篇を内容とする単行本『日本の橋』が刊行されたのが同年十一月二十一日、奥付の発行日に従えば、『英雄と詩人』に先んじること四日、処女評論集に位置づけられる。早く二十歳の頃に発想の萌芽が認められる「日本の橋」は、橋の形態や架橋の精神を考察し、日本と西欧の本質的な差異を発見したユニークで類ない文芸評論として、その斬新さに文壇の注目が集まり、読書界に広く迎えられた。本文庫に収めたのは、同題前著から、大幅に加筆修正した「日本の橋」と「誰ケ袖屏風」のみを残し、「河原操子」「木曽冠者」を新たに加えて昭和十四年に刊行された『改版日本の橋』である。

　西洋の橋も日本の橋も此岸から彼岸への交通を目的とするという点では共通している。しかし、その精神的な意味は大きく違う。わが国の橋はより自然に近く、しかも深い信仰心と結びついたものが多い。これが、所収の文章中でもっとも有名な「日本の橋」の主題だろう。ここではわが国の橋の美しさの叙述を通して、わが国の文化の美の本質が語られているのである。

　収められている評論の中では、「木曾冠者」がもっとも充実している。芭蕉も木曾義仲を愛した。「木曾を知る少年たちは、みな木曾を愛する。」保田與重郎もこの人物に並々ならぬ愛情を持っていたことが、文章をとおしてひしひしと伝わってくる。（滋賀の義仲寺にはこの三者の遺跡がそろっている。）私も『平家』の中では「木曾殿最期」のくだりが好きだ。義経ばかりでなく、義仲も英雄として扱われるべきことを保田は強調する。判官と冠者。文芸文庫と違って、歴史的仮名遣いで収められているので、けっして読みやすいわけではないが、じっくりと読めばそれだけのものは得ることができる。この著者独特の大和の風景を髣髴とさせるようなしみじみとした文体も歴史的仮名遣いのほうが一層魅力的である。
