クリシュナムルティのこの本は、講演の聴衆に対して、「聞く」とはどういうことなのか？　について語りかけるところから始まる。私たちは、あるがままのものに耳を傾けているのだろうか？　自分の価値観や思想に照らし合わせながら聞くとしたら、それはあるがままのものの認識からは離れてしまうのではないか？　その言葉に同意して賛成するのも、反発して批判を加えるのも、自分の過去経験や記憶に基づくものであるなら、あるがままのものに耳を傾けて聞いたことにはならないのではないか？　では、そもそも本当の意味で「聞く」というのはどういうことなのか？　そういう問いかけが探求されていくなかで、聴衆や読者のなかの「記憶の反応」がだんだんと静まっていく。そしておもむろに、クリシュナムルティは「人間とは何か？」の探求を始めるのである。

　たくさんあるクリシュナムルティの本の中で一番よくまとまっています。

　生や死など個別の悩みに対して明瞭な答えを出しています。
彼の考え方、思想があらゆる側面で理解でき、感動することでしょう。　
けれど、一回読んでも理解できないかもしれません。
そんな時は、また読みたい、または、悩みを解決したい時に開いて読むと、理解できるときがあります。　
そういった意味では聖書のようなものであるかもしれません。
この本を皮切りに彼の本を読むことをお薦めします。

クリシュナムルティの代表的な本のひとつです。クリシュナムルティの思想が良くまとまっています。たくみに編集されています。
ただし、翻訳はすでに古く、原文の意味を伝えていないところが目に付きます。この翻訳の原本はThe first and last freedomです。ひととおり読んだらすぐに原文で確認してください。クリシュナムルティが本来意図したところに感覚で出会える瞬間があると思います。単なる思考でない機能がそれを指し示します。原本はいつ読んでも何かの発見がある素晴らしい本です。
