辞書並みに分厚い本です。
マルセイユ版タロットをもとに、ユング研究所で講義を行っていた著者が大アルカナ２２枚について詳細に解説しています。
でも、タイトルから「ユングによるタロット研究」について載っているという期待をしていた私は、ユングがちっとも出てこないのでちょっとがっかりです。あくまでも「ユング的」タロットの本です。

占いの実践的な話がほとんど無く、小アルカナについてもすっとばし、ひたすら大アルカナについてを豊富な図版とともに説明しています。
ただ、魔術的な「逃げ」がなく、とことん歴史的資料と伝承から再構成していく姿勢には好感を持ちます。結果、マルセイユ版にも詳しくなれます。

　ユングは、研究対象としてタロットに多大のエネルギーを注ぎました。生涯で一番エネルギーを注いだのではと、それくらい。著者の写真としてサリー ニコルズとユングが並んで立っている写真が使われています。ユングのタロット研究を心理学的に「進めた」著者の自信作であろうと思われます。
　なにぶん大著なのと高価であるのと、内容が濃いので、ちょっと占いの参考に程度だと持て余す本ですが、プロを目指す方や心理学を学んでいる方、心理学が好きな方には、素晴らしいテキストになることは疑う余地なしと思われます。
　また、フレンチ・メソッドという解釈法があり、大アルカナ２２枚をIとXI（１１）というように二段に並べ、小アルカナ５６枚を大アルカナになぞらえて読むという方法なのですが、その方法論だとこの本がとても重要になると思います。

ユングの「元型」という考え方をベースに、タロットの大アルカナを解釈しています。とはいえ、タロットの本というよりも、どちらかというと、ユング派の人がタロットを題材として本を書きました、というような内容です。なので、ユング心理学の大好きな人にはオススメの本です。

　ただし翻訳のせいなのか、個人的には読みずらい箇所も多々ありました。分厚いし、値段も高いので、ふつうのタロット・ファン向けというよりも、ユング・マニア向けかもしれません。
